Jenny's journey
fruity jenny:
Hi all,
I'm looking forward to starting this journal and sharing more of my ideas, experiences and questions with you smitten.gif
I have been keeping up with my gardening since this has become a new hobby of mine. I'm growing vegies and have got some small fruit trees going in my yard too. I would love to plant more out the front in future and love seeing, so far in picture only, gardens that use their verge for planting edible foods too. It could be fun to do this and put out a sign saying that people are welcome to taste. This would be my preference over worrying about food being pinched. Anyhow that would definitely be a future idea as I have to show to myself that I can take care of what's already growing and it is quite a bit of getting used to this extra commitment for me.
Last week I turned my compost heap which was quite hard physical work for me as my arms are not my strong point. I persisted and got the job done all by myself! Woo hoo!! I discovered a mouse hiding :-[ and not being happy at me discovering it, it ran off finally and hid in some nearby wood cuttings lol. My cat hasn't been active at all in capturing mice etc since he now has cancer and is in "retirement". He is currently enjoying being on my lap having quality time ;)d
I had dug out trench next to my vegie patch to stop grass from growing into it and today me and my 16yo son filled it up with sawdust so that the patch won't dry out so quickly. We had fun ;D putting sawdust in and then wetting it and walking along it so it would compress down. It felt nice on the feet and it was good to work together. When I asked what he thought of our transformed garden (we had garden blitz 1 month ago) he replied that it, "looks better". I agree it does look better with new plants, straw and mulch it has improved the look. I feel eager to get a nice sitting area with a big outdoor table and chairs, I also really want a hammock when our pergola is up. It would be luxurious for me, & others, to relax in.
Also today in my garden I played a mini game of basketball with my 14yo son, first one to score to 21, and I actually won. This is pretty surprising for me as my skills are ordinary with basketball. I definitely think I have more energy on the primarily fruit diet, not that heavy tired feeling :(
Earlier in the day we were planning to go for a "hills" walk but ended up settling on going for a local walk. We took boys' dog to park nearby where there is river flowing & ducks... We had fun getting our feet wet and playing a bit in the water and dog "Sam" got completely wet! We had our picnic and when we got back to their Dad's house I picked lemons and remaining oranges which I find rewarding ::)
We stopped off at Asian store to get some durian. I bought one Thailand Durian and 2 Malaysian Durian which are much smaller and also much more costly. It's a bit of a treat which I won't be able to do very often. I decided to leave the much larger Thai Durian out to defrost for tomorrow and keep the other 2 frozen. I've tried the Thai Durian twice from supermarket but realise after reading some posts that they are perhaps partly defrosting when they put them out on display only to be refrozen overnight. This is never advisable to do with food. I noticed supermarket ones had pinkish tinge or discolouration on the non edible middle and this didn't look right. The fruit still tasted fine. It will be interesting if these ones are different because in photos on internet the pink is not there.
There are still so many fruits to discover which gives me a wonderful feeling. I hope to get to taste many more in my life time!
;) Take care,
Jenny

Yay for you, starting a journal Jenny! I'm glad! Its great to be able to share and look at what others do. Its so inspiring! Sounds like a great time with your kids! And tasting durian - yum! I hope to try some one day. Jackfruit is the nearest I've come - and that's very tasty.
I've been wondering about compost piles. Our soil has a lot of concrete in it so I've been layering the compost with green material/weeds/grass cuttings. I think burying it would be a better idea. I'm impressed you could turn it yourself!
Have a great weekend!
Best Wishes,

Hi Sunmaiden,
Thanks for your encouraging response ^-^
I think I tried Jackfruit many years ago when on holidays in Indonesia but I can't remember it now. The Durian is a very different flavour to anything I've tasted before.
On composting, I think if we're getting the stuff back to the earth, however that is, then that in itself is a good thing. Better than scraps going into ordinary land fill. It's certainly a new experience for me to be more actively working on making good compost for my garden. It sounds like what you are doing is a good idea. My mum buries hers into garden and prefers this way. I still have to work out what to do with all the new scraps - currently just putting them in a pile out the back, that's probably why people have 2 compost heaps, one that's being filled and one that's waiting to be used.
Hi all,
I've added some photos which is another new hobby of mine since I learnt how to use my digital camera and how to download them ::) One is of our vegie patch with new sawdust around edge, fruit photo - hand picked oranges, err that is hand picked by me 8) and other fruit photo of mangoes, organic on plate and supermarket ones in box :-*
I realise my "vegie" patch is largely fruit filled, maybe I could call it my fruit patch. It has tomatoes, strawberries (which I'm counting as fruit), cucumber, capsicum, eggplant, advocado tree, passionfruit vine and guava tree. The non fruits are peas, beans, basil, chives, spring onions, brown onions, cos lettuce & beetroot. We have 20 strawberry plants. Recently I read about a garden having 50! I also read about an interesting cafe in Perth that grows heaps of strawberries as well as other fresh foods that they use in their menu. This was an inspiration to me. I'm still on lookout for more seedlings of strawberries lol. Next most is tomatoes at 19 plants and I've got stakes next to all of them as of today ;)d
I had fresh OJ this morning about 5 1/2 glasses.
Lunch I opened Durian and ate 2 sections, apparently they usually have 5 sections. It is a very large one and this I found to be filling enough for me. There is some light discolouration on non edible middle (maybe) but not obvious like supermarket ones I had previously. Perhaps it's to do with being frozen which is the only way we get them in Australia. The fruit looks and tastes lovely and is light yellow in colour. It seems very rich and sweet so I would probably not be wanting it too often.
I ate again at about 3.30pm, 3 mangoes. And will probably have another meal tonight later.
I had some digestive problems yesterday afternoon and this afternoon so it couldn't have been from Durian. It could be mixing some cooked food Thurs, Fri & Sat or detox. Today I've had all raw again. I have ongoing pimples on my face and neck that I think I have to accept as some sort of detox, this has been going on for some months since fasting and having more citrus so it could be related to citrus.
I get the impression from reading other posts here that certain fruits make you detox faster. I would love to know more about this. Someone, it might have been Gurth, posted about dates being like this. If any of you have knowledge about this I would love to hear. Before my fast I ate heaps of dates but now they sit here hardly being eaten. My youngest son had a stint with them too but lately he ignores them too. I'm grateful that fresh dates seem to last so long unlike other fruit which would have been in the bin by now... err compost :o
We had a humid day today with rain predicted but I only felt a few drops, about 27 degrees. I went for an early morning walk 7.15-8.15am. I love Sunday mornings, sooo quiet and peaceful ;)
Hope everyone has a good week.
Take care,
Jenny

Hi Jenny,
Acne has been an ongoing problem for me since beginning a high fruit diet more than 1.5 years ago. I know that's not encouraging, but recently its subsided to the point where I think its disappearing. What seemed to help was either having less sweet fruit and more fat or cutting out the overt fats. After much experimenting and therefore, some inconsistent eating patterns, my favorite method is as much fruit of any type that I want, except avocado. And its taken some months of overt-free eating to make this change. I'm also living in a very warm, humid climate, which might be a factor, and there's also lots of non organic banana plantations in the vicinity so pesticide residues may also be an issue. I'm hoping my skin resolves to the point of being able to include some fatty fruit (cause I love it). I honestly don't know if the fatty fruit is an issue at all. It could also be that I am finally finishing some detoxing. I've never done a long fast or mono fruit period, so fruit eating may have been a gentle and prolonged detox period.
As for dates, I would think fresh dates would be super! I've had some issues with supermarket dates, which were probably heat dried, not raw, therefore presenting a whole host of issues from not being raw. My skin was a little sensitive to them, but worse was experiencing some cramping that reminded me of menstrual cramps. I read that others have experienced the same with processed dates - too bad they still taste good:) Perhaps my taste buds will be quicker to tell me these things in the future!
Loved seeing your garden! Have you ever read of strawberry barrels? They look like a great way to have strawberries in small spaces.
Best Wishes,

Dear Jenny <3
It is a pleasure to visit your journal <3
Regarding your Durian, I would be interested to know your thoughts on the Malaysian ones. Do you know which variety the Malaysian ones are? We usually get Musang King because it is our favourite but we also have had Golden Bamboo and D24 from Asain shops in Australia.
The Durians sometimes have a little tag on them which states the variety.
In my experience, eating mono does increase detoxing, especially citrus. I have read of other raw food folk also finding citrus to be quite an aggresive cleanser.
Also, I feel that Grapes can have this effect. Johanna Brandt in her book, 'The Grape Cure', believed this was because as well as helping with elimination, Grapes acted as a solvent to help remove stored toxins.
I feel that citrus may act in a similar way.
Maybe it is to do with the acids in these fruits.
In addition, I feel that any juicy fruit diet will allow the body to detox to some extent because the body is getting a rest from digesting heavier foods that are more taxing to it, and so more energy is freed up for house-cleaning of the body.
Also, the high water content of the juicy fruits can have, I believe, a cleansing and 'washing' effect for the body.
Arnold Ehret and others believe that Apples are a good cleanser because in addition to them being a juicy fruit that can cleanse at a cellular level, the pectin and fibre in them acts like a broom to physically 'sweep' the intestines.
Thank you for sharing your experiences and photos in your journal ;)d <3
Wishing you a very Beautiful Day <3
Love and Peaches,
