Jeff’s experimental 100% fruit diet

(1/190) > >>

Jeff:
Hi, I’m new here.  This is my first post.  This seems to be such a fantastic forum for fruit lovers!

My diet has consisted of 100% fruit since 12/1/09 (no nuts, no seeds, no greens, etc.).  I also haven’t had any fatty fruits during this time.  I’ve had some cucumbers during the experiment, but none of the other “vegetable fruits”…cucumber is the only one I actually like to eat.  So far, I feel great.  If, at some point, I feel a decline in my health, or develop strong cravings, I will not hesitate to add something back into my diet…probably lettuce.  Right now I am really loving the fruitarian diet.

I’m 32 years old, live in southern California, and am currently a stay-at-home dad watching an active 1-year-old (who also loves fruit).  My wife has a job as an actuary.  Before the birth of my daughter, I was a graduate student in theoretical physics working on my PhD.  I still do some research in my spare time, and still hope to earn that degree eventually.  I also enjoy running, weight lifting, hiking, camping, & gardening.

Although I’m new here, I’ve been on some of the other raw forums for a while now.  Check me out: http://www.30bananasaday.com/profile/MedjoolFan, http://rawnaturalhygiene.ning.com/profile/MedjoolFan, http://www.rawvegantalk.com/profile/JeffakaMedjoolFan.

A little more on how I got here:
I always loved fruit, but besides that grew up eating a pretty typical American diet (meat & potatoes).  My dad is a doctor, and my mom is a nurse, and because of that the ideas of conventional medicine were pretty deeply ingrained in our family.  It took a long time, well into my 20s, before I began to read about these things on my own and develop alternative ideas.

It was a long road, but I finally reached the status of being a 100% low-fat raw vegan in 2007 (at the age of 29), and have been so ever since.  In 2007-2008, I quickly discovered a couple things. First, I found that I had a natural dislike of most overt fats. I simply did not enjoy eating nuts, seeds, or avocados. I am much more attracted to sweets. In fact, the only overt fat I actually liked was durian. And, I did enjoy a lot of durian during this time. However, all the durian I can find here is frozen, shipped from Thailand, and not organic. I knew this wasn't optimal. I also felt that eating durian had a strange effect on my body & mind. For these reasons, I decided to cut them out. I had my last durian, and last overt fat, on Thanksgiving 2008. Since then, I have been on an overt-fat-free-diet experiment. I plan to keep it up. However, if I were ever in a location where I could obtain local, fresh, organic durian, I would seriously consider it. :)

The second thing I observed in 2007-2008 was that I strongly disliked eating greens in their natural state. But, at the time, I didn't know of Anne Osborne or other fruitarians, and just read books like The 80/10/10 Diet and Green For Life. I thus thought that greens were essential, and so I started blending to get my greens in, rather than listening to my body. I found that lettuce was the green which was least repulsive to me. My diet since 2007 has consisted essentially of fruit plus blended lettuce, with a different green added very rarely.

I really became interested in fruitarianism in 2009, but continued to blend greens while researching this topic. I have a couple other reasons for having an interest in fruitarianism, besides disliking greens. Other advantages of a fruitarian diet: ethics – I am no longer harming plants when I eat my food, environment – fruit trees yield more calories per acre and don’t damage topsoil, and I am not eating the toxic chemicals in the leaves that plants use for protection (“lettuce opium”, etc.).  Actually, the fact that my fruitarian experiment started on Dec. 1st is accidental. On that day, while making my usual lettuce smoothie, my blender broke. I took this as a "sign", and haven't had a green since. Even without the broken blender, I was planning on going fruitarian soon - originally I had planned on 1/1/10 as being the start date. :)

In researching fruitarianism, it became clear to me that one of the big concerns of many is getting low on minerals on this diet. And I knew that organic fruit is thought to be higher in minerals than conventional fruit, and so thus I have chosen to eat essentially 100% organic since Dec. 1. To me, this seemed to be the conservative thing to do. It may not be necessary, and if things continue to go well, I think I'll relax on this constraint eventually, and rely on my instincts more to pick out the most appealing fruit, regardless of its source.

I am a scientist by training.  It has taken years for me to break free from this and be trusting of my instincts.  For example, I used to go out of my way to consume various things for various nutrients (oranges for calcium, mangoes for Vit E, etc.).  I felt that this worry caused unnecessary stress in my life.  Now I simply eat the fruit which attracts me the most at the time and trust that this will provide all that I need.

So, since Dec. 1, I eat only fruit. And no blending, no juicing, no supplements, of course no salt, etc. I eat the part of the fruit which appeals to me. If the skin of a fruit tastes good to me, I'll eat it, otherwise, I won't. I avoid cores and seeds, as I don't find them appealing. The only time I eat seeds are when they are unavoidable, such as in kiwi. I eat only once or twice per day. I always have a morning meal, after I work out. And then, if I feel hungry, I'll have an afternoon meal too. If not, I'll skip that one. I think eating just 1 or 2 large meals per day is easier on the teeth than grazing constantly. When I feel thirsty, I'll drink a little distilled water, but most of my water is coming from the fruit.

So anyway, I know that is a pretty long intro.  I think I’ll use this thread to post updates on how my fruitarian experiment is progressing.  Time permitting, I’ll also post some of the details of what I've been eating daily, in case others are curious.  :)

Take care,
Jeff

Dear Jeff  <3
A Big Hello and Welcome to the forum. <3  :)
It is great to have you here.  ;)d
Thank you for joining us and sharing your story.  <3
Please feel free to make any suggestions for the forum. This forum is everybody's and thanks to the lovely nature of the members, apart from needing admin to process new members and delete non-revelant spam, there is very little need for moderation, and this is no one individual's forum.

I love what you say about trusting your instinct, and I think it is geat that you are eating organic fruit.
I do feel that the quality of fruit is so important, as is listening to our bodies.

I can also relate to feeling strange after eating frozen Thai Durian; something that has not happened with frozen Malay Durian or fresh Durian.
I would often feel tired after eating the frozen Thai Durian, and also thirsty. And I just do not get thirst on a fruit diet.

Wishing you a Beautiful Day, and looking forward to your imput.
Love and Peaches,  <3

Hi Jeff,

I enjoyed reading your intro. I visited your pages and saw the cuteness that is your daughter! <3 :) Do you feed her a mostly fruit diet? Is she fruitarian? My hubby-to-be is pretty accepting for me to be fruitarian and to have a fruitarian pregnancy but would feel more comfortable having seen other fruitarian babies and seeing that they are healthy... and to get the okay from a doctor as well (which, I am not sure happens here in the states).

Thanks and welcome to the forum!
